Le Bron James, a power forward with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Le Bron James, the NBA’s all-time top scorer, put an end to rumors about his future on Wednesday by stating that he is still passionate about basketball and is not yet ready to retire.

In May, when his club, the Los Angeles Lakers, lost to eventual champions Denver in the Western Conference final, James said he had “a lot to think about” amid rumors that he was considering quitting the game.

But James allayed any worries that he could be prepared to resign in a speech at the ESPY awards event on Wednesday.

After winning the prize for Best Record-Breaking Performance for surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the league’s all-time leading scorer, James said, “I don’t care how many more points I score, or what I can or cannot do on the floor.

“Can I play this game without abusing the system? That is the true question for me. I’ll be finished the moment I’m unable to deliver everything I’ve got on the floor. Fortunately for you people, that day is not today.

“I’ve never, ever cheated the game in my 20 years playing this game and all the years before, and I will never take it for granted,” he continued.

James, who turns 39 in December, rejected rumors that he wanted to play in the NBA with one or both of his sons, including his oldest son Bronny James, who will play college basketball at the University of Southern California next season and could potentially make the jump to the NBA in time for the 2024–2025 season.

However, he claimed that mentoring his sons had helped him keep his enthusiasm.

“Do you know what makes me return each year? It involves coaching and supervising my lads and their teammates, the man stated.

“When I see those youngsters, it instantly reminds me of why I play. Through their sheer enthusiasm for this wonderful game, those kids help me get back to where I need to be.

I do, in fact, have something left. Plenty still,” he added.

James stated that he had frequently asked himself such issues in his contemplation following the defeat to the Nuggets.
